These three metaphors for how technologies may be deconstructed offer a powerful way for students to learn how to think critically about their made world.  Used appropriately, the metaphors help the student both understand the many technologies involved in products and systems, as well as predict the elements of new products and systems.

This slide shows how the developmental chart offers a guide for teachers for planning the next level of project complexity as well as student expectation to demomstrate a high level of un-guided learning, and innovative attributes.

The chart, if used correctly, also can be use dto diagnose student learning, where a student's skills and understandings for a design project may be at various areas of the chart at the same time, based on what aspect or technology involved in their project is being assessed.
