Diagnosis & Remediation Ideas

Thu, 12/08/2011 - 01:05 -- kseemann

This video shows how to use the chart to diagnose a student's learning across a project, and then use that diagnosis to plan the design brief of the next project to develop the areas diagnosed as early in development, and challange the areas diagnosed as upper and consolidated in development.

NOTE: the graphics in some videos, as with above, were produced under earlier layout styles of the Technacy Chart.  However, the structure of the chart and its logic remains unchanged.

Elements of a Genre Defined

Thu, 12/08/2011 - 00:34 -- kseemann

This Slide provides the definition of the essential  elements that togther make up a coherent form or genre of technology.

  1. Purpose and Context (or setting, or location conditions in which the design is to succeed and which serves to critique "appropriateness")
  2. Tool Systems, including equipment, devices, instruments and software tools and devices.
  3. Materials, including physical or resistant materials, food ingredients, fabric and fibre, software data and file types, anything that is being 'shaped, transformed, altered, positioned, moved, covered, arranged, managed'.
  4. Agency, all encompassing of the values, knowledge, skills, techniques, organisation, method, and socio-cultural influences that together or in part is embodied or is an extension of the agent.

Technology Genre Theory

Wed, 12/07/2011 - 15:04 -- kseemann

This slide shows the common and core form of all types (genres) of technological knowledge. It offers a point for classroom and staff room discussion.  Can we claim to have knowledge of any Technology if our knowledge does not "at the very least" always include this form in its development or use?"  Have a discussion and see what it evokes?  How might technology genre theory assist a learner to plan forward a design project, or indeed to reconstruct a technology?

Technacy and Assessment Strategies

This link below takes you to a PREZI file.  On iPads, you may need have downloaded the Prezi viewer for iPad player.

The PREZI provides an excellent discussion peice on the need to recognise scale and scope of technology complexity and offers a core set of areas to undertake learning assessment.

Inspiring Technacy Posters

Creative technacy posters for your classroom and staffroom

These four posters were created by Bill Merrick, Design and Technology teacher and honours graduate.  They have proven very popular. It is suggested they are printed in colour, and laminated for display around the faculty.

Working Technologically

Sat, 11/26/2011 - 00:11 -- kseemann

This slide is to be used as a discussion piece to critically examine key points of difference between working technologically and working scientifically.

  • It acknowledges that there are many methods that these two fields of knowledge share in common.
  • Any individual may of course cross over routinely to the other forms of knowing to progress and validate their ideas
  • This slide opens debate to help identify the unique conditions for when students work technologically.
  • Typically technological ideas (solutions) are validated through a design defence based on how well they have met a design brief. A good defence contests how well the solution "fits" BOTH the selected or assumed context parameters as well as the intended place conditions, enduser and purpose of application.

The defence of the final design, is often through contesting a technology's Best-fit for meeting a design brief and end user context parameters.

  • The slide supports the view that individiuals also draw on many other fields of knowledge in the course of a project (such as from the Arts, Math, Language, Music etc).
